Stormy Skies: How to Handle Changing Weather While Boating

Updated: 20 hours ago

Florida’s weather can shift rapidly, and every boater should be prepared for sudden storms, high winds, or unexpected changes in the tide.

Changing Weather While Boating

Here’s how to stay safe and enjoy stress-free boating, no matter what the forecast brings!

Plan Ahead and Check the Forecast

The weather can be unpredictable in Florida summers! Before heading out, always check the latest marine forecast, radar updates, and tide charts. Look for signs of incoming weather changes, like darkening clouds or sudden wind shifts.

Pro Tip: Download and use a marine weather app for a more in-depth look at the forecast. These apps include radars, barometric pressure, and wave size to name a few.

Keep Safety Gear On Hand

GBC boats are equipped with all necessary gear like life jackets, flares, and a first aid kit.

Communication is key in stormy conditions! Always have a charged phone to contact our team at the marina or emergency services.

Know When to Head Back

If the weather starts turning, do not wait! Return to the marina before conditions become hazardous.

Strong winds and rough waves can escalate quickly, making navigation difficult.

Also, be aware of protected areas where you can seek shelter if needed. Channels, marinas, and calm bays can offer a safe spot if you need to wait out brief storms.

Practice Smooth Boating Techniques

Reduce speed in rough waters and keep the now into the waves to maintain control.

Avoid sudden turns or stops that could make the boat unstable!
