Fish Recipes: For Locally Caught Fish in Florida

Locally Caught: Florida’s Fish Recipes

At this South Florida boat club, Memorial Day weekend is prime fishing time. The cobia, mahi, and blackfin tuna are biting. And what do these three fish also have in common? They are incredibly delicious to eat. To prepare a fresh fish caught the same day on your Gulfstream Boat Club rental, in the waters off Delray Beach, Boynton Beach, or Palm Beach, is to sample the best South Florida has to offer. Looking for amazing fish recipes? GBC brings you the best recipes to put your culinary skills to the test.

Cobia Recipes

Cobia is a sustainable fish, with sweet, almost nutty taste that needs very little additional flavor. Cobia can be broiled, grilled or sautéed. We at the boat club like to eat this South Florida fish as soon as possible, with as little done to it as possible. Publix Aprons actually has great recipes, and many of them are perfect for locally caught fish. Here are two recipes for cobia: one super simple, and one just the tiniest bit fancier if you’ve got someone in the house who requires a little butter and bread crumb on their fish.

Florida's Fish: Cobia Recipes
Locally caught cobia is great just simply grilled.

Mahi mahi Recipes

Mahi-mahi is another South Florida fish with a mild, sweet flavor, and we at Gulfstream Boat Club can’t get enough of it. You asked for Fish Recipes, we think Mahi. It’s got a nice texture and large, moist flakes, and is sturdy enough for a sandwich, or fish tacos. The skin is thick and should be removed before cooking. Try this healthy Grilled Mahi-Mahi with Avocado-Chile Salsa from Myrecipes.com. With ingredients like avocado, lime, and serrano chiles, this dish is pure Palm Beach, and is perfect for a Memorial Day party.

Blackfin Tuna Recipes

Gulfstream Boat Club reports that in South Florida, it’s a great year for catching blackfin tuna. And we can’t think of a better way to serve it than rubbed with barbecue spices, with a side of local, in-season mango. This recipe for Barbecue-Seared Blackfin Tuna from Florida blogger Suwannee Rose takes tuna steaks to the next level with an avocado sauce. One of our favorite fish recipes for sure!

Tuna steaks prepared with barbecue spices and a homemade avocado sauce? Yes, please!

Well, you can say one thing about the members and staff of this South Florida boat club: We certainly eat well! Memorial Day weekend is one of the best times all year to fish for your own dinner. Yellowfin Tuna Fishing Season in South Florida

If it’s April, it’s time to talk about yellowfin tuna fishing in South Florida. The season begins in mid April. Wild-caught Atlantic yellowfin tuna is not only delicious and rewarding to fish for, but it’s a smart seafood choice because it is sustainably managed and responsibly harvested under U.S. regulations.

Where to go Yellowfin Tuna Fishing in Florida?

Are you interested in a yellowfin tuna fishing charter with Gulfstream Boat Club? We would be thrilled to arrange it for you through our partner business, Boatsetter. Boatsetter is an amazing national network of rental boats, and its hub is in South Florida. Call or email us to find out about how to plan an amazing fishing trip—from which you’ll return with a boatload of tuna.

Book a deepsea fishing adventure for yellowfin tuna through GBC!

About the yellowfin Tuna…

Yellowfin Tuna Appearance:

  • Yellowfin tuna are torpedo-shaped.
  • They are metallic dark blue on the back and upper sides, and change from yellow to silver on the belly.
  • True to their name, their dorsal and anal fins and finlets are bright yellow.
  • Yellowfin tuna can be distinguished from other tunas by their long, bright yellow dorsal fin and a yellow strip down the side. They are also more slender than bluefin tuna.

Yellowfin Tuna Behavior and Diet:

  • Yellowfin tuna grow fairly fast, up to 400 pounds, and have a somewhat short life span of about 7 years.
  • Most yellowfin tuna are able to reproduce when they reach age 2 or 3.
  • Females spawn about once every 3 days during the spawning season. They produce an average of 1 million to 4 million eggs each time they spawn.
  • Yellowfin tuna feed near the top of the food chain on fish, squid, and crustaceans.
  • They are prey for top predators such as sharks and large fish.

How to Catch Yellowfin Tuna?

Whether deepsea fishing for yellowfin tuna, or other types of fish, it is good to keep in mind these ten tips, courtesy of Boatsetter:

  1. Check out the reefs and wrecks. The small fish that live among shipwrecks and natural and artificial reefs are prime targets for big fish. This is your chance to nab a big fish in its own hunting grounds.
    2. When fishing for yellowfin tuna, keep an eye out for dolphins. The two often travel together.
    3. If you notice seagulls or other birds flying around a certain area, there could be a school of small fish that they are trying to turn into dinner. In turn, there could be large fish on the prowl for the smaller ones.
    4. Use fast-trolling lures to catch fast fish like tuna.
    5. Anchor the boat and drop bait down into the reef to catch fish such as grouper or snapper.
    6. If you’re bottom fishing, use lures like large heavy-duty jigs to get the bait down deep into the water.
    7. Use natural or artificial bait to troll around a tower or buoy to get the attention of fish.
    8. A fish finder, GPS or nautical map can come in handy on deep sea fishing trips. Most sport fishing boats come fully equipped with all of the latest navigational gear and equipment.
    9. If you’re prone to motion sickness or have never been out on a deepsea fishing boat, it is a good idea to take some type of medication beforehand. If you do start to feel queasy, it is best to stay up on deck in the fresh air and watch the horizon. Don’t go below deck thinking you can sit or lie down. Trust us on this one.
    10. Finally, take an expert with you. No one, especially an inexperienced boater, should ever be out alone.

Considering a deepsea fishing experience in South Florida? Skip the overcrowded tourist boat and book a private fishing boat with captain through Gulfstream Boat Club’s partner business, Boatsetter. Give us a call at 561.865.7797 to find out more!

Intrepid Boats available at GBC

Where to rent Intrepid Boats?

Gulfstream Boat Club prides itself on having the finest fleet of boats available in South Florida, and that’s why we partner with Intrepid Boats so often. Intrepid Boats makes its boats one at a time and to the discerning specifications of its customers. Their boats feature advanced composite construction, which makes them stronger and stiffer, faster and more fuel-efficient, and able to deliver the safest, smoothest, driest ride on the water.

GBC’s 32′ Intrepid is great for fishing or cruising.

With Intrepid Boats’ incomparable fishboat heritage, no fish is safe. Their sports fishing yachts not only are equipped with plenty of innovation and technology, but their unique hull design offers a smooth ride and extraordinary stability to propel you to the fish fast and comfortably. The outboard engines deliver better range for longer offshore fishing trips, with less noise, fumes and vibrations, especially while trolling around the waters of Palm Beach County.

Are Intrepid Boats Safe?

You think Gulfstream Boat Club is a tough customer? Intrepid Boats builds boats for federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, sheriff departments, police departments and departments of natural resources across the country. If their boats are safe, fast, and precise enough for them, they’re good enough for our boat club members!

Why are Intrepid Boats so popular?

Thanks to Intrepid Boats’ distinct stepped hull design, the CG (center of gravity) is positioned perfectly, producing an extraordinarily well-balanced ride. The boat takes off level and actually feels like you’re levitating onto plane. Waves are flattened, at any angle, with very little jolt transmitted. This makes for a smooth, dry ride, no lag and a noise factor that is really not a factor at all. The ride is quiet, allowing for normal conversation with an extra measure of comfort and pleasure for all aboard, which makes their boats perfect for outings with family and friends.

Intrepid Boats offer the smoothest ride possible.

What are some popular Intrepid Boats Sizes?

Currently Gulfstream Boat Club features two 32-foot and one 40-foot Intrepid for the exclusive use of members and renters. Here are the unique features of each:
